Phantom...why must you always try to run...?
Those were the words Clockwork had uttered as he grasped the half-ghost child by the chin, squeezing the cheeks every so slightly. He had glared right back, his ghostly tail swirling in his ire. He wasn't running! What reason had he to run? This was all he had ever known...this trapped, bound, imprisoned existence. He didn't want to leave it.
But the humans...they were so interesting. He was curious.
We've told you time and time again--HUMANS. ARE. FORBIDDEN!
The Observants pointed and snarled--or as much as a walking talking eyeball could snarl. He just curled himself lazily into a corner of his threadbare cell, his room, his home. His ghostly tail lazily flickered about as he flipped through the book Clockwork had brought for him. This was nothing new.
They were always berating him about something.
Come along, boy...
These words were almost always mockingly soft, a contrast to the tight, punishing grip the Observants would have on his bicep. They'd tug him along and he'd bow his head and look away. The minute any being--ghost, human, or otherwise, witnessed the Observants come and drag him back to their lofty Observatory the results were always the same.
Fear, disgust, and hate.
He resigned himself to yet another disappointment, yet another loss of a potential friend--
"Wait!"

These are sketches for an Alternate Universe idea wherein Danny Phantom is actually a permanent resident of the Ghost Zone. He's half-human, but he doesn't remember his name or anything of his human life. All he can remember is the Ghost Zone, having these chains on his wrist, and the cold dark cell in the Observatory. All he can remember are the Observants who seem to be his caretakers, his guardians.
All he can remember is Clockwork, who wavers between a kind ghost that looks out for his interests, and a harsh taskmaster who doesn't take his bouts of rebelliousness well.
I sketched these on the airplane to Dallas.
